Coinstar : Green on the Inside

Coinstar’s Change for our Earth™ program promotes the environmentally beneficial reuse of coin. Internally, we have implemented changes to our manufacturing and operations functions to further our sustainability practices – and we will continue to explore new ways to contribute.

Following are some of the green practices we’ve employed to date.

Saving fuel: GPS in Vehicles
Nearly 87.4% of our fleet in the field has been equipped with GPS units to provide fuel savings. By installing the GPS, we are able to monitor vehicle speeds, resulting in reduced speeds and improved fuel efficiency. In 2007, the company realized fuel savings of over 9,000 gallons. By early 2009, the company expects to have 100% of its fleet vehicles converted.

Recycling Kiosk Parts
As machines come out of the field for upgrades, we make every effort to reuse components. All machines are thoroughly tested before they go back out the door.

Saving Raw Materials: Metal Recycling
Over the past two years, Coinstar has recycled over 720,000 pounds of scrap metal as machines and parts are retired from service.

Energy Efficiency: Florescent Bulbs
Coinstar kiosks and skill crane machines utilize lighting. The majority of our existing backlit units have digital energy-saving florescent bulbs, and 100% of our new machine production utilizes these bulbs.

Paper, Plastic & Can Recycling at Headquarters
Coinstar employees recycle paper, cans & plastic with bins in lunchrooms, offices and common areas.
